STEVE PERRY ONLINE STAR WARS UNLIMITED MAY 20 1997
Here's the enitre conversation. All sidechats were edited out. I spoke to Steve Perry and asked him to come. Steve Perry already receives enough fan mail, so changed his AOL screenname to StevePerry (that isn't his real screenname). Capeman69 was the host of the evening. I deleted CapeMan69's screenname each time so it looks like the person who sent him the question is asking it. WJStreeter CapeMan69: Welcome Mr. Perry StevePerry: Evening, folks. CapeMan69: We want to thank you for coming to, I will be the host for tonight StevePerry: Happy to be here. CapeMan69: Mr. Perry, if anyone annoys you place them on ingore StevePerry: Not to worry . . . CapeMan69: I would like to ask the first question if you dont mind CapeMan69: With everyone one writing about what happens after the movies, why did you write about CapeMan69: between the movies StevePerry: Because that's where Lucasfilm wanted to go. StevePerry: They thought it would be cool to go between two movies. CapeMan69: The reason I like the book so much, it puts things together nicely StevePerry: Seemed like a good idea to me, too. GA. CapeMan69: how did you come up with all the ships you made? StevePerry: Actually, Jon Knoles came up with _The Outrider_. I did . . . StevePerry: Xizor's and Guri's ships. StevePerry: The designs were collaborations with the artists who did the StevePerry: comics and games. StevePerry: GA. EwolkJedi: Mr.Perry, why was the videogame and the book so different? StevePerry: They were supposed to be different. The idea was to give a StevePerry: slightly different ride with each medium. OSun KingO: Did you make up the characters like Prince Xizor? or did they give you characte StevePerry: I made up most of them. Xizor's name came from Lucy Wilson at Lucasfilm StevePerry: but I got to flesh him out, so to speak. StevePerry: Dash and Guri and the Bothans were pretty much mine. Strafe2: Black Sun, where did the idea for that crime organization come from? StevePerry: Lucasfilm wanted a mafia-like underground. The name came from an old book of mine. StevePerry: I always thought Black Sun was a good name for a mob. StevePerry: GA CapeMan69: How much lee way did Lucas give you with the plot of the story EwolkJedi: I just e-mailed you steve StevePerry: Pretty much leeway. We hammered out a storyline at a meeting StevePerry: at Skywalker Ranch, then I went home and did the outline. StevePerry: The book and most of the other stuff was based on that outline. CapeMan69: Did you get to meet Mr. Lucas StevePerry: Nope. George was out of town the day I went to the Ranch. Too bad. StevePerry: He autographed a copy of the book for me, though. StevePerry: And so did Mark Hamill. StevePerry: GA. Strafe2: With the success of Shadows, has LucasFilm approached you about writing another Star Wars Novel StevePerry: Not a novel. I am doing a series of comic books set in the SWs universe for Dark Horse. StevePerry: Called Shadows of the Empire: Evolution. First one should be out next February. GLSONE: Did Dash Rendar really die? StevePerry: Nope. Dash didn't die. His ship went into hyperdrive just before it would have plowed into StevePerry: the debris from Xizor's ship. CapeMan69: I knew it CapeMan69: will he be in any of the comics ? StevePerry: Dash won't be in the first five issues, all we have planned so far. Guri will be. StevePerry: Doesn't say he died in the book. StevePerry: Human Replica Droid, not robot. RPGenius14: ask him him if Zixor or Xizor what ever his name really died at the end!! StevePerry: GA, StevePerry: Current thinking at Lucasfilm is that yes, Xizor did die. StevePerry: GA. Mario120FX: Steve,Why did Luke and the others had to go through the sewers? StevePerry: Only way into the castle was through the sewers. Too much security elsewhere. OSun KingO: What do you think of the Shadows of the Empire toys? Think anything could have been improved StevePerry: I would have liked to have seen a Guri figure. And I didn't much like all the muscles they StevePerry: added to Luke and Dash . . . StevePerry: The micromachines came out nice. GA. Clarkbar87: With the game for N64, did they have to check with you first before they made changes StevePerry: Nope, the N64 game was separate from the book. GA. Strafe2: I thought that the method for changing Chewbacca's appearance, was rather cool, Strafe2: How did you come about that StevePerry: How do you disguise a wookiee? As another wook . . . GA. SirIcepick: Who or what compelled you to do a CD for the book? StevePerry: The CD wasn't my idea, but I thought it came out great. They used to compose music for all StevePerry: kinds of things, before there were movies. StevePerry: GA. Clarkbar87: Will there ever be a movie based on the book "Shadows of the Empire"? StevePerry: No movie. They'd have to regress the actors twenty years. StevePerry: Be possible in animation, but so far, Lucasfilm isn't interested. Mario120FX: What's your favorite part in Shadows of the Empire book? StevePerry: I have two favorite parts in the novel. When Leia gives Xizor the old knee is one. StevePerry: When the droids fly the ship is the other. StevePerry: GA. Clarkbar87: What is your favorite Star Wras story out of them all. (Be honest) StevePerry: Hard to pick a favorite SWs story. I like ANH because it was 1st, but ESB because it was StevePerry: better. StevePerry: Go Ahead. GLSONE: How did you come up with the books title StevePerry: Lucasfilm came up with the title. EwolkJedi: Mr.Perry, if they make the episodes 7.8.9 and you be interested in writeing the book StevePerry: I'd love to write the books for the new movies. Me and two billion other writers . . . StevePerry: Go ahead. CapeMan69: Who wouldnt CapeMan69: SirIcepick: How did you come to the idea for the people and life style in Courscant City? StevePerry: Some of that I made up, som of it I got from Kevin Anderson, who was working on a book about StevePerry: Coruscant. StevePerry: Some of it I got from Lucasfilm. Go ahead. CapeMan69: GalvezX15: Comment: Shadows of the Empire is THE greatest Star Wars novel I have read out of CapeMan69: all of them StevePerry: Thanks, Galvez. Clarkbar87: Are there going to be any other movies other than the ones coming up in 1999, 20 StevePerry: In theory, there will be three more after that. StevePerry: I don't have dates for those movies, too far out. StevePerry: Go Ahead. CapeMan69: This next ??? has been asked at least 20 times RPGenius14: ask him if there is any place where i could get and address for autographs StevePerry: If you'll send me an email with your snailmail address, I'll send you an autograph plate StevePerry: Plate = Sticker . . . Mario120FX: How is Dash like Han? StevePerry: How is Dash not like Han? I invented Dash because Han was on ice and I needed a rogue. CapeMan69: LOL StevePerry: Dash is a better shot. StevePerry: And he has a faster ship. Obi735: Ask how long it took to make to book StevePerry: It took me about two weeks to do the outline. Once that was approved, about 4 months to do StevePerry: the book. Strafe2: How did you come up with so many interesting ways for the characters to kill off ot Strafe2: other character StevePerry: I didn't want things to get boring when they took each other out. Go ahead. Mario120FX: How did you come up with the story of the Rendars? StevePerry: I wanted Dash to have some history, so I just made up a family and background. StevePerry: he needed a reason to be unhappy with the Empire. StevePerry: And to be a loner. Go ahead. WJStreeter: What other books/works have you done? I once heard that you wrote an episode f WJStreeter: for thunder cats StevePerry: I've written some TV, not Thunder Cats. Batman, Gargoyles, Ghostbusters, like that. StevePerry: Plus about forty books. GLSONE: Who is your favorite auther besides you? GLSONE: Do you read other STAR WARS books YodaJedi8: Do you think your story is as good as the movies?(I do StevePerry: Books and movies are different forms. I thought my book was okay. Not as good as the movies. Nathan224: Why didn't he let guri go with luke and the StevePerry: Sorry, I missed that, all the hubbub. Yeah, I've read most of the other SWs writers. StevePerry: Go ahea. StevePerry: d StevePerry: I wanted to use Guri again, so I let her escape. Go ahea. SANDPE0PLE: Ask Steve if he knows anything about the new movies coming out GalvezX15: Steve, Will there ever be a book, maybe a sequel, continuing with Shadows StevePerry: I don't know if there will be a sequel novel to SOTE. There will be comics that pick up the thread. OSun KingO: Ever see The Star Wars Holiday Special, what did you think of it StevePerry: I saw the Holiday special when first it came out. I wasn't too impressed. Go ahead. StrWrsMn: what other books have you written? StevePerry: I wrote five Conan novels, three or four Alien novels, a bunch of stuff on my own. StevePerry: My first book was called _The Tularemia Gambit._ StevePerry: My favorite title was _The Man Who Never Missed_. Go ahead. RPGenius14: how many times have you been on-line?? StevePerry: I've been on AOL for almost five years. You can check my bio . . . StevePerry: I've been online in various places since 1984. Go ahead. DeamonEdge: "Mr. Perry, how can you come up with suitable names for characters? DeamonEdge: I have major problem with my novel StevePerry: In SWs, you just come up with names that have the same tone as the names already there. StevePerry: In your own stuff, you have to work at it a little. Foreign languages are good. StevePerry: Go ahead. Strafe2: When LucasFilm approached you to do the book, had you been expecting it, or was it Strafe2: a surprise StevePerry: I did a novelization of a movie called "The Mask" as a favor for my editor at Bantam. StevePerry: To return the favor, he offered me a shot at Shadows. Guess I got the best of that deal. DeamonEdge: "why did you chose Star Wars to be the topic of a novel over all the other possib StevePerry: When Bantam asked me, I agreed. I loved the idea of putting Darth, Leia and the others StevePerry: through their paces, are you kidding? StevePerry: I got to get inside Darth Vader's head and tell everybody what was there. StevePerry: Part of what I wrote shows up in the movies. StevePerry: It was a big rush. Go ahead. CapeMan69: how about what was your fav. part of writing SOTE? OSun KingO: Were you allowed to use any characters you wanted from star wars for Shadow's? StevePerry: First draft is always the most fun part of writing for me. Go ahead. StevePerry: Yep, I could use any of the characters I wanted for SWs, assuming they were alive. StevePerry: Go ahead. Streeter: Is there any link between your characters and your personal life? StevePerry: Always. Writers usually mine their own experiences for material. I do. StevePerry: Not exactly, of course. Go ahead. DeamonEdge: "Once you began to write, what types of difficulties did you encounter?" StevePerry: Difficulties. Mostly not stepping on canon, or other books. But I had editors to keep StevePerry: that straight. StevePerry: Go ahead. Nathan224: how many drafts did you go through before you finally got the perfect sequence pu Obi735: How old he was when he wrote the nove StevePerry: I did three drafts. I shipped the second one to Bantam, then added in their notes StevePerry: and did the third. StevePerry: I was, lemme see, 47 when I wrote SOTE. StrWrsMn: can i get an autographed copy of you book, or if i send you a copy, will you send it back StevePerry: Email me here on AOL with your snailmail address and I'll send you an official Bantam StevePerry: sticker with an autograph for your book. StevePerry: I don't charge for autographs. Snailmail is U.S. mail. DeamonEdge: "Do you expect to write another Star Wars novel ? StevePerry: Probably not, unless they ask me to do the movie tie ins. CapeMan69: In the book Leia wondered if Dash was Han's brother. Have you ever considered CapeMan69: them actually related? StevePerry: No, I'll send you an _autograph_ you can put into your own book. StevePerry: I thought about having Han and Dash related, and it's possible, since Han was a StevePerry: street kid, StevePerry: but I decided against it. StevePerry: Go ahead. CapeMan69: Good call. Is there any last questions for Mr. Perry StevePerry: Got time for maybe one more . . . CapeMan69: Last Call WJStreeter: who is your favority character? StevePerry: Leia. CapeMan69: Second StevePerry: Probably Han and Luke . . . Thanks folks. Enjoyed talking to you. CapeMan69: Well I think that wraps this everything up StevePerry: MTFBWY . . .
